  • This page outlines requirements for the degree in The Arts (BA The Arts). Lang students can also major in Contemporary MusicContemporary Dance, and Theater. Undergraduate students across The New School can select a minor from Lang's offerings, including Contemporary DanceContemporary MusicTheater, and Visual Studies. Arts majors can enroll in any minor of their choice, including an Arts minor in a discipline different from the one they are studying as their major. 

    The interdisciplinary Arts curriculum at Eugene Lang College encourages students to explore the arts within a liberal arts framework, balancing academic study and research with creative experimentation and practice. Students majoring in The Arts (BA, The Arts) choose a concentration from the three listed below. Visit the concentration's webpage for degree requirements.

    Requirements for the BA in The Arts

    Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the Departmental Faculty Advisor and your Student Success advisor. Learn more and track your progress in the Detailed Degree Requirements and Arts Requirements Worksheets below.

    Choose a concentration below (either Arts in Context or Visual Studies).

    Arts in Context concentration

    Introductory courses:

    • Choose one (3-4 credits):
      • 1 3–4 credit Interarts (LINA) course
      • 2 2–credit LINA courses 

    Other required courses:

    • 5 courses in one of the Arts disciplines (Contemporary Music, Contemporary Dance, Theater, or Visual Studies) (15-20 credits)
    • 5 courses in a liberal arts area of study following either the minor requirements for that area or an alternative plan of study approved by both the Arts in Context departmental faculty advisor and the departmental faculty advisor of that liberal arts program (15–20 credits)

    Senior capstone:

    • Choose one (3–4 credits):
      • LINA 4900 The Arts Senior Seminar: Essay (offered in spring)
      • LINA 4901 The Arts Senior Seminar: Creative Projects (offered fall and spring)
      • LINA 4902 The Arts Senior Seminar: Time-Based Performance (offered in spring)
      • LINA 4990: an approved independent or collaborative project
      • Lxxx4xxx Senior Capstone course in a liberal arts area or a 4000-level course approved by the Arts in Context departmental faculty advisor

    Total credits (BA in The Arts, concentrating in Arts in Context): 36–48

    Visual Studies concentration:

    • Introductory courses:
